New 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor with improved noise reduction
The EOS 50D features a newly-designed 15.1-megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor which is capable of recording up to 4752 x 3168 pixels with full 14-bit A/D conversion for extremely fine tonal gradation. Ready to capture images in an instant, the sensor is designed to work with Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses with a conversion factor of 1.6x. It’s capable of recording at sensitivities previously too noisy for shooting in low light or subjects in motion. The EOS 50D has a high-precision 9-point wide area AF that uses cross-type points at f-stops of f/5.6 or faster, enabling the camera to focus faster, more accurately, and in difficult lighting situations. AF sensitivity is a stunning EV-0.5 to EV18. Adding to this AF performance, the EOS 50D incorporates a diagonally mounted cross-type sensor that is sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines at f/2.8, perfect for enhanced operation in dim light. New Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction setting
Canon’s exclusive Lens Peripheral Illumination setting takes into account any light falloff in the corners of the frame and corrects it, making for a perfectly exposed image. Correction data are detected automatically on a number of Canon EF lenses and can be entered manually through included the Canon EOS Utility software.

Updated EOS Integrated Cleaning System
The EOS 50D’s Self Cleaning Sensor Unit eliminates stray dust that enters the camera when changing a lens or when out in the field. The sensor’s IR-cut/Low-pass filter cleans itself automatically with ultrasonic vibrations every time the camera is turned on or off and features a new flourine coating to minimize dust adhesion. Dust missed by the cleaning unit is captured by Canon’s Dust Delete Data Detection software and can be erased from the image file.

Self Cleaning Sensor Unit
A key element of minimizing dust is preventing it from clinging to the front surface of the imaging sensor. To combat this, the EOS 50D features a Canon-designed Self Cleaning Sensor Unit. The low-pass filter at the front of the sensor shakes off dust automatically with ultrasonic vibrations, removing dust from the sensor assembly. The EOS 50D also has a coating on the front surface of the low-pass filter, to increase its resistance to dust sticking to the sensor.

Dust Delete Data Detection
Dust that may still remain on the front of the sensor can also be erased with software included in Digital Photo Professional (DPP) Version 3.3 or later software. A simple test shot of a plain, white object can be taken, using a menu setting. This Dust Delete Data image is analyzed in-camera, and the location and size of any remaining dust is added to any subsequent pictures taken. This data is transmitted along with the image, whether JPEG or RAW, and can be either manually or automatically erased in Canon’s DPP software. This added software option ensures the cleanest possible image, perfect for printing or archiving.

Creative Auto goes a step beyond full auto with on screen setting display
The EOS 50D has a new Creative Auto mode and a quick control screen that helps novice users narrow the gap between fully automatic and manual control. Flash Photography
The EOS 50D features the acclaimed E-TTL II flash metering system. With E-TTL II, the exact same 35-zone metering sensor used for measuring ambient light is also used for flash metering – giving even finer metering command of the image area. Excellent take anywhere camera
A lot has already been written about this camera. It has met my expectations for a pocket snapshot and video camera…clear pictures and video while always being just the right size to fit into my small purse or my pocket. There are better cameras that are larger, but they would get left at home due to their inconvenience.

Canon SD1100 IS 8MP is great compact camera – buy it
Purhcased this camera ~ 8/17/08 for spouse and very glad i did.

She is going on vacation with her girl friends and we didn’t have much time to make decision on which camera to buy nor time for learning curve on how to use.

She wanted:
Something small and compact that’s easily to carry

Easy to use point and shoot ( no messing around with menus )

Good battery life so she didn’t have to recharge or change often

No latency ( wait ) between taking multiple pictures back to back

The Canon SD1100 IS 8MP delivers.
I really enjoy this camera. Super easy to use. Battery life seems pretty good ( i’ll get her separate battery though for backup ). Stylish design. Compact yet feels good in ones hand. Buttons work for both her little / petite fingers and my extra large hands. Pictures look great so far.

Items really like:
a. starts up fast after pressing power on button
b. lens retracts automatically after minute of no use
c. optical stabilization ( haven’t noticed any blur in low light pics )
d. no latency between back to back pics ( possibly due to fast memory )
e. battery life appears to be very good
f. recharging battery takes only 1:30 hr:min
g. good zoom both during pic taking and when viewing afterwards
h. very intuitive and easy to learn all features

Looked at following in stores: Coolpix 600 & 550’s, Canon, Casio, Olympus.

Money wasn’t an object. I really wanted to get her the best compact camera that was easy to use, durable, etc…

This camera met and/or superceded all our requirments and needs and it’s very inexpensive ~ $185.00 US.

Added Bonus, there are tons of excellent ratings on web for this camera, so one can’t go wrong, unless your needs require something this camera simply isn’t designed to do.

I recommend purchasing larger memory than what came with camera:
32MB is complete inadequate
2GB is adequate
4GB is completely acceptable

However, I purchased the Patriot SDHC 16GB Class 6 memory yesterday because it was so inexpensive. Used to cost couple hundred dollars.

Paid 59.99 + tax.

I’ve had no problems with Memory. I didn’t have to format memory. Simply inserted it into camera straight from package. It’s fast. I’m able to take 8M pictures back to back without any hesitation or delay.

So far movies are working fine too.

14-bit A/D converter With the EOS Rebel XSi, analog to digital signal conversion is executed by a 14-bit processor, which generates digital data with incredibly smooth tones. Formerly a feature only present in top-of-the-line pro digital SLR cameras, the 14-bit conversion gives incredibly smooth transitions from light to dark colors, with far less risk of “banding.” A sky at sunset is a perfect example. New advanced features include spot metering, external flash settings on the camera’s menu, and a new higher-magnification viewfinder The EOS Rebel XSi’s 35-zone evaluative metering system with improved white balance analyzes light based on each zone in the viewing area, enabling the camera to choose the overall best exposure for the entire scene. It now features a spot meter, which reads a tiny area (about 4 percent) of the picture for extremely precise metering. EOS Integrated Cleaning System Photographers who must change lenses in dusty environments will find the advanced Canon EOS Integrated Cleaning System a tremendous time saver. Dust that settles on the sensor surface is removed using ultrasonic vibration. This Self Cleaning Sensor Unit routine is automatically activated whenever the camera is powered on or off. (It can also be manually activated.) A special collar positioned around the sensor collects the loosened dust. Dust particles can also be automatically removed via software. By shooting a plain white subject, the photographer can acquire dust position data that is transmitted along with the image (whether JPEG or RAW). Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) version 3.3 or later software can be used to manually or automatically erase the dust spots. It’s not one feature, it’s a built-in system to minimize the effect of dust in high-resolution digital images.

Self Cleaning Sensor Unit A key element of minimizing dust is preventing it from clinging to the front surface of the imaging sensor. To combat against this, the EOS Rebel XSi features a Canon-designed Self Cleaning Sensor Unit. The low-pass filter at the front of the sensor shakes off dust automatically with ultrasonic vibrations, removing dust from the sensor assembly. The EOS Rebel XSi has a new coating on the front surface of the low-pass filter, to increase its resistance to dust sticking to the sensor.

Dust Delete Data Detection Dust that may still remain on the front of the sensor can also be erased with software included in Digital Photo Professional (DPP) Version 3.3 or later software. A simple test shot of a plain, white object can be taken, using a menu setting. This Dust Delete Data image is analyzed in-camera, and the location and size of any remaining dust is added to any subsequent pictures taken. This data is transmitted along with the image, whether JPEG or RAW, and can be either manually or automatically erased in Canon’s DPP version 3.3 and later software. This added software option ensures the cleanest possible image, perfect for printing or archiving.

Picture Style settings With the EOS Rebel XSi’s Picture Style technology, photographers can change the look of their digital photographs. Color, saturation, sharpness and contrast settings create noticeable variation in the saved image. Changing a Picture Style setting is almost like a 35mm film user switching from one type of color film to another. In addition to six preset Picture Style settings, Canon offers additional downloadable “Picture Style Files,” that can be installed into your camera for even more imaging options at your fingertips.

Highlight Tone Priority This vital Custom Function lets photographers get even better detail in bright highlights, even in contrasty lighting conditions. It’s beneficial for nearly any type of picture, from mid-day shots on a safari to portraits in sunlight, where a user may encounter bright highlight areas where he or she wants to preserve details. Finally, there’s no impact on the camera’s shooting speed or burst rate when Highlight Tone Priority is engaged. It takes full advantage of the EOS Rebel XSi’s new 14-bit per channel conversion, meaning there are 16,384 distinct colors from darkest to lightest in each color channel.

Flash Photography The EOS Rebel XSi features the acclaimed E-TTL II flash metering system. With E-TTL II, the exact same 35-zone metering sensor used for measuring ambient light is also used for flash metering — giving even finer metering command of the image area. If you prefer a broader area for flash metering, there’s a menu setting to change to “Average” flash metering, where the entire 35-zone area is measured evenly for flash exposure.

The Canon Speedlite 430EX is the ideal step-up accessory for powerful flash shooting with the EOS Rebel XSi. It has excellent flash power (maximum guide number of 141 ft./43m at ISO 100), and is the perfect way to get great flash pictures when you can’t get right up to the subject. The 430EX is also great for bounce flash, with its tilting and swiveling flash head. It automatically zooms the flash head to cover lenses ranging from 16mm up to 105mm or longer with the EOS Rebel XSi. Of course, it works with the camera to provide full E-TTL II automatic flash exposure. And the 430EX has a powerful AF-assist beam, which allows the camera to autofocus even in total darkness on subjects as far as 32 ft. from the camera.

Canon EOS Digital Solution Disk (Version 17.0) The EOS Rebel XSi comes bundled with an updated Canon EOS Digital Solution Disk, which features powerful software programs designed to extend the EOS experience to the computer. These include Canon’s ZoomBrowser EX for Windows (Version 6.1), ImageBrowser for Macintosh OS X (Version 6.1), Digital Photo Professional (Version 3.3), the totally new Picture Style Editor (Version 1.0), Canon’s EOS Utility (Version 2.2), RAW Image Task (Version 2.8), PhotoStitch, and PTP TWAIN Driver. ZoomBrowser EX (Version 6.1) for Windows and ImageBrowser (Version 6.1) for Mac OS X are the easy, user-friendly options for viewing and editing of JPEG and even RAW image files. Both allow viewing of numerous types of images including finished TIFF and BMP files. Both also have a variety of search options for finding images, allow re-naming of single images or batches of files, and offer a variety of options for printing without using a separate image-editing program.

RAW Image Task (Version 2.8) for Windows/Macintosh This software is an integrated component of ZoomBrowser EX (Windows) or ImageBrowser (Mac). It allows processing of RAW images from EOS cameras, including the new EOS Rebel XSi, with a variety of adjustment possibilities. These options, as well as the overall color, contrast and “look” of RAW Image Task, closely mimic the characteristics of Canon’s in-camera JPEG processing.

Great step-up from S3-IS..
The XSi is a great step-up from the high-end point & shoot. The learning curve was fairly short when moving from the “S3 IS” to the XSi. Some functions are actually easier to use on the XSi than on the S3.

The camera size & weight is still reasonable, I carry the XSi with an attached Sigma 18-200mm zoom lens, in an M-Rock Glacier bag attached to the handlebars of my bicycle. Some of my photos may be found on Flickr, where I go by the name “Versageek”

A Fair warning to those moving from “point & shoot” to DSLR (applies to most DSLR’s not just this one): While the 18-55mm lens is great for macro shots, if you are used to 10-12x zoom on a point & shoot, you’ll need to purchase an additional lens costing between $500-$1000+. You’ll also want an extra battery pack (~$50), a 58mm UV haze filter to protect your lens ($~40+), a sturdy camera bag (~$80+) & a good tripod (~$120+).

Better than 35 mm; just short of 6×6 cm
I have used 5×7 in., 4×5 in., 6×6 cm and 35 mm formats over the last 30 years, and have developed and printed all my work in my own darkroom (B&W and color). The combination of Canon’s XSi plus my PIXMA Pro 9000 printer (also purchased through Amazon.com) surpasses the quality and longevity of my color C-prints and Cibachrome in 6×6 cm and 35 mm. Thanks to Amazon for delivery in under the time specified. And thanks to no arguments about stock outages and kit contents, which was so prevalent with several less-than-professional NYC camera outfits over the years, except for B&H Photo, a truly professional supplier.
I don’t think I can add much to what’s already been said about this camera. The cost and the quality of this camera and PIXMA 9000 printer come in far under what my darkroom cost me many years ago–only deliver superior results–with no carcinogenic chemicals.
I also own a Canon A620, which has delivered fantastic results for a small point-and-shoot camera that fits in your pocket.
The next step is to build up my Canon lens selection; I’m converting from being a previous Minolta (35 mm) and Mamiya (6×6 cm) user.
One word of advice: Don’t skimp on the inks and use any cheap stuff other than Canon inks (or OEM inks for the printer you own). After all, permanence is worth paying for–just as the quality print materials you purchased and the archival processing you would have spent hours doing in the darkroom.

My first DSLR Cannon Rebel SXI
This being my first DSLR, I have been impressed with it so far. I have taken about 200 pictures so far in different modes and only had two or three not to be useable.It is great for taking pictures where no flash is wanted. The sport mode is smooth for humans or animals or cars, motorcycles,etc. The IS lens is worth every penny for me. It is very light weight, so easy to carry all day. I would buy it again.

Good Digital Camera for a Beginner
This is my first digital camera. I have enjoyed using it to capture life here in the NW. I wish it had more options for zooming in but think you have to go to something larger & a new price range to get that.

Great camera
Took this guy to Costa Rica for a week and took some amazing photos and videos. Fabulous camera! A little pricey, but worth it (esp for optical image stabilization).

So good I gotta get another one
I have owned this camera for about 7 months now and I just love it. Or should I say loved it. I lost it just the other day and I’m none to happy about it. We used this camera all of the time. The picture quality is great, fast response, and compact enough to fit in you pocket. I looked at quite a few cheaper models before buying this one and never looked back. I’m now on my way to get another one. There are cheaper ones but none better for the price. Outside of an SLR this one is best for me. We went to a concert and it took wonderful shots when zoomed in no flash on. Also took some great video. I’d love to share them with you but I never downloaded them so someone else no owns them. DRAT!! Anyway, I’d get this one and based on what I’ve read, it’s even better than the three new models that just came out, at least in some regards – recovery speed being one and 8.3 megapix is plenty crisp enough for an amateur.

I have used this camera in Iraq for 9 months. On and off missions. I have taken over 2,000 pic’s and about 20 videos using the Elph. I am so happy with this camera and the easy to use featurs. While I was on mission my driver hit a big bump in the road and the camera fell out of my hand and broke the shutters. To go though 9 months of where and just now have it brake… Amazing. So I am buying anotherone.

Nice and compact – good for your money
I bought this camera after reading the numerous good reviews that people have posted and I must say that this camera does not dissappoint. It is an easy to use, compact, sleek camera which takes great pictures. I am very pleased with it. My only complain about it is that it takes a couple seconds to actually take the picture – when you press the button it does not take the picture as fast as I would like – you have to hold it down for a couple seconds till it takes the picture. But all in all – great buy for your money.

Fantastic Product from Canon
I love the clarity in images even in low light conditions. Battery seems to last much longer than previous versions of Canon and I love the new built in image stability feature. I haven’t seen a single blurred picture out of all the pictures I’ve taken so far. Great camera!

Best camera for your money.
This is by far the best camera for your money, when you are on vacation with the family carrying around a bunch of stuff you can just put this little baby in your pocket and you are ready to go.
Buy this want, you wont regret.

Once the directions are read and understood, which is the main ingredient, it takes great pictures with a minimum amount of hassle. The software makes downloading to a PC easy and quick. The battery life seem comparable to other cameras I’ve owned, the main factor, in battery life, is common sense with zooming and using the digital display.

worth it
Nice camera, especially for the price. It could do a little better capturing movement without being blurry, but it has done a fine job for me and is pretty easy to operate.
