This camcorder is great. It replaces a SD JVC camcorder that died; fortunately just prior to my first child being born. So I did my due diligence and finally chose the SR11 from Sony. The SR12 is identically spec’d but with a larger hard drive, thus more capacity. I went with the SR11 as even on the highest HD setting, I would have to change the battery several times before the hard drive would fill up. For me I have found that decision to hold up well and I come nowhere close to filling up the 60GB hard drive between recordings. I saved a few pennies vs the SR12 and applied that to getting an extended capacity battery. Much better money spent IMO. The batteries on these cams are getting better but you still need an extended pack to record a long session. What good is the extra capacity if you don’t have the battery life? The HD is not a limiting factor for how much you can record, its the battery life. SO for a similar amount of money as an SR12 I have an SR11 that can actually record more with my extra battery before I have to go and find a power outlet. Besides if I ever (don’t know how) fill up the hard drive, I can slap in stick media and record to it!

As far as quality goes, it is stunning. I have a 50″ Pioneer plasma HD deisplay and this camera really makes it shine. It is amazing that for this amount of money my home movies look 10x better than my local networks SD newscast. As a matter of fact, it’s really not that far behind the HD video being broadast; especialy when considering the money involved! This camera is the difference between watching home movies that look like 10 year old tapes on America’s Funniest Home Videos and watching your newborn baby on blu-ray. Money well spent IMO.

It has strong additional features as well. The facial recognition feature is very effective. The 5 channel (not 5.1) microphone works surprisingly well too. The soundstage surprised me on the first clips I replayed on my home theater. Sound panned as I panned the camera; all this on a consumer grade cam is amazing. The hybrid recording is a plus in my opinion too. Pepole get scared at the thought of walking around with a hard drive getting bumped around. This has not been an issue with these cameras so far but lets consider the possibility. The key advantage of Sony’s hybrid system is in case a failure does occur. The Canon’s I looked at were either flash memory or hard drive only. If either fails you are done. With Sony’s system say the hard drive does die, just slap in some stick memory and keep on rolling video. The flash memory only camcorders appear to be much cheaper but add in the cost of getting the stick media and see that advantage almost disappear. Toss in the fact that the biggest stick media is around 50% of the capacity of this camera’s hard drive and 25% of the big brother SR12 and you’re gonna be switching memory cards or uploading to the laptop much more frequently. Plus there’s the possibility you could misplace them juggling them around while on vacation.

Again in summary, money well spent and hard to believe this level of quality is finally within reach of us end-users.

excellent camera my very first one
sorry amazon i bought my camera form circuitcity for 100 doaalrs cheaper and got a free batter, and camera bag for 100 dollars more so i saved money one thing that really got attention fro this camera was the eyepiecce to look into if the sun is to bright and you cant use lcd screen touch screen whcich could be had to see sometimes because of the glare of lights you use the eye piece to capture your video or images hands down winner i highly recomend it.

this is great camera video is great, picture quality is great easy to use and navigate it has an option to switch night vision on and off best part is you could buy accersories for teh camera brighter flash widescreen lens, extra zoom lens water proof casing thats good for 17 feet

my only complaint is that you need the computer program that comes with the camera to transfer your pictures, and video to your pc thats the only thing i dont like about the camera

Best consumer level video camera on the market
As the title states, I feel this is about the best you can expect from a consumer level camera on the market today.

I have been experimenting and putting it through it’s paces for a month now, and am pretty familiar with it’s capabilities and quality. I am currently on my family’s second vacation trip of the year and and have taken some footage ranging from indoor/outdoor pet shots, the mountains and waterfalls of western Colorado, night-time 4th of July fireworks, indoor, well-lit cousin/family members and an indoor shot of mom covering a chocolate cake with meringue icing. Lots of good, typical, casual-user type footage.

With the recent purchase of a mini HDMI to standard HDMI cable, I was finally able to view all of this footage on a 45″ Sony BRAVIA LCD TV in all of it’s HD glory. Before, I had been getting by with the AV/Component cables and there is a night and day difference between those and the digital signal of HDMI.

A good part of my footage was shot in the lowest quality possible. I also shot a substantial bit in full HD. Honestly, the low quality looks darn near as good as the full quality, so for those who somehow shoot hours of footage on end without access to their computer to dump the material to, you can vastly extend your shooting time if necessary with minimal compromise. Besides, even at full quality HD, a 60 GB hard drive is like having a camera with SEVEN 60 minute tapes spooled end to end. At the lowest quality (HD) recording time is just under 23 hours. There’s really no reason to upgrade to the SR12 unless you are some kind of shoot-a-holic, but shooting 120 GB of footage would be an editing nightmare anyway.

Viewing the full HD footage on the BRAVIA TV via HDMI, it looks about as sharp and clean as you could possibly ask for. You can pick out the individual strands of fur on animals cleanly.

I cannot comment on 5.1 surround sound, as I am not yet home from this trip, but as soon as we return (tomorrow) I will definitely test it out.

I recently handled the Canon HV30 in CC and was not very impressed with the build quality or the viewfinder – poor refresh rate and everything plastic. The Sony SR11 gives you a hefty chrome metal push-dial for adjusting focus/white balance shift and aperture. It’s very effective for controlling focus when in low-light/indoor situations or the aperture. I find that the camera DOES lean toward cool colors by default, so I have the White Balance Shift set to maximum (+4) to bring a warmer, more natural tone to things. You may find that you need to do the same. Thankfully, when adjusting parameters manually, they are retained, meaning you can set White Balance Shift, Focus, AND Aperture all at the same time. It’s about as good as it gets without jumping into the $3000 dollar camera range.

The x.v. color is a new, wider color gamut that is supposed to give more life-like coloration to subjects. If you shoot in this mode, you will only see the difference when played back on an x.v color compliant product (new Sony BRAVIA TV sets). Otherwise, from what I can tell, it seems to produce a somewhat less saturated image. I am still trying to decide which look I prefer. I feel the normal colors look pretty accurate under most conditions. Occasionally, greens seem a little too bright (trees, grass), but overall, color reproduction is very good.

One thing I love about Sony video cameras is their smooth operation. The zoom is smooth but agile if you need to punch it in our out fast. The viewfinders are also very smooth, unlike many other video cameras. (I say ‘video camera’ because ‘camcorder‘ just sounds too consumerish and cheap for my taste).

The build quality feels very solid, has substantial weight, and feels very secure in the hand, thanks to being able to get a grip on the top of the camera. I think people who lament over the weight of the camera and wish for something lighter are foolish. The WEIGHT adds INERTIA which means more RESISTANCE to SHAKING of the hand. This is a vital fact that most consumers seem ignorant of, and trust me, watching footage on a big screen, you better pray that your footage is as close to tripod-steady as possible.

This camera comes with a fun and cute DVD that goes through some of the basic filming techniques. Several of these concepts are taught in a typical introductory Film & Video class, so it is actually quite a useful video, and it is amusing (to me at least).

I think I could not have bought a better camera for what I desired in a camera, the price point, and what is currently available. I would have PREFERRED to save up and purchase a Canon XHA1 for the pristine optics, better manual controls, and extremely good light gathering (very low low noise even in challenging lighting situations), but I do not want to mess with tapes and the 1:1 tape transfer process again. Hard disk recording with a 3k HDV video camera is possible but expensive. This camera and it’s accessories/cables fits perfectly in the very nice leather bag I already own, and is very well protected therein, so for me it was nice to not need to buy a new carrying case.

Genuine Canon 48x Advanced Zoom Capture the action from even farther away when using Canon’s exclusive Advanced Zoom. By utilizing Genuine Canon Optics and the DIGIC DV II Image Processor, Canon has developed a new way to extend beyond the optical zoom, both wide and telephoto, while continuing to maintain optimal image quality. With Canon’s Advanced Zoom, you can now enjoy stunning video from any distance.

Image stabilizer Shoot rock-steady video — even when you’re at maximum telephoto without a tripod. It is even effective while panning or zooming.

Even though video and still images have different color requirements, DIGIC DV II digital signal processing ensures optimal image quality for both video and still images. Thanks to DIGIC DV II image processing, the FS100 produces video with improved color reproduction — especially in skin tones, and dark and light scenes. It also uses a hybrid noise reduction system that employs two types of noise reduction — for images that are crystal clear.

Quick Start Instead of powering off your camcorder between shots, simply press the Quick Start button to put the camcorder in stand-by mode.
Widescreen HR recording The FS100 records true widescreen for picture perfect video. Canon’s image processing system uses the entire width of the image sensor, capturing a big picture in true 16:9 widescreen so no one and nothing is left unseen. And Canon camcorders take advantage of more pixels to give you amazing quality.

Customer Reviews

Great for family use
This camera seems to work fine for taking home video. It is lightweight and compact. I took it out of the box and had no problems with using it right away…it is extremely user friendly. I have previously owned a Canon video camera and loved it so this camera was an obvious choice. My previous camera is almost 10 years old and still works wonderfully which speaks to the quality of Canon products. My movies look amazing and the stillness of the movie even with high zoom is perfect. No motion sickness from shaky video. The battery life has been long lasting and transferring the clips from a built in SD reader in my laptop was a piece-of-cake…rapid transfer and plays on Windows easily. I haven’t tried the SD converter for MPEG as another reviewer recommended, nor have I tried the software but I am completely happy with this purchase! They are very nice looking cameras too! I love the wine version-being somewhat influenced by the “cuteness” of it.

Perfect
Awsome camera. Unbelieveable zoom, incredibly quiet operation that picked up a violin player at an outdoor wedding who was 200+ feet away, making great background music for every scene. Use a tripod, then walk away from it as it records, and nobody is spooked at somebody taking pictures.

Windows Vista’s Media Player, Movie Maker, and DVD Maker all handle these .mod files perfectly. (Had to upgrade to Vista Ultimate since you can’t upgrade from XP Pro version directly to Vista Home Premium)

The Windows Vista DVD maker was a big suprise – it creates menus that are moving video automatically – very professional looking DVD’s compared to what I was expecting. Thank goodness I didn’t buy an AVCHD camera – with all the editing problems of handling that format which spills part of the existing frame into the next one, so that you need diesel computer power to put the spilled video back into it’s frame.

Direct USB Transfer of files to PC from the camera went fast but didn’t transfer 20% of the files! All the while the LCD on the camera said “Don’t turn off, don’t disconnect the USB cable, while attached to the PC” What the Canon FS-100 LCD meant to say was “dismount from the PC before you disconnect” (using that icon in your system tray that leads to the message on the PC that it’s “safe to disconect”. Had to use a $20 SD Card reader on a USB wire to get the missing files into the computer. The camera was probably faster than my 6 year old Pentium 4, so my PC choked on the data causing the missing files – maybe. Still the SD Card reader works, while the USB transfer seems to go fine but misses some files.

The camera seems to create unnecessarily complex file numbers – uses Hex for example, then occasionally adds an extra A or B to an existing file name. Seems odd.

Attached to the composite video ports on the side of my Philips tube HDTV, I was suprised at the quality of the video – seemed like HDTV – filled the screen. Previously I thought composite video was supposed to be junk. Nope. And, once started it didn’t need any button pushing to continue to the next file, although the remote would control the action.

Caution: read Wikipedia on the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R. Older players will only do DVD-R but they skip. DVD+R is preferred because it doesn’t skip, slide, halt, freeze – except that players older than 2002-2004 will not play DVD+R.

Best Buy store last week had all three colors – wine, blue and silver at full list price $399 plus tax. Nope. Go Amazon – mine arrived in perfect condition. Awsome, just awsome. I love it.

great for family vacations
Bought this camcorder for a family trip to Italy. I wanted one that was small and portable. I wanted it to fit in a waist pack easily or else I would end up leaving in the hotel and not using it.

This one was perfect. No, it is not a high definition camcorder…it is standard definition. But that was fine with me. It uses SDHC memory cards…no more tapes! A 4 GB card recorded about 1.5 hours.

Once I got home, it was fairly easy to transfer to my PC and then burn a DVD. Warning-the manual is terrible. It tells you how to connect the camcorder to PC but that’s about it.

After I transferred the video files to my PC, I thought I could burn the DVD from there. I learned that you have to keep the camcorder connected to the PC via USB, in order to burn the DVD. And you have to use DVD-R and not DVD+R. Once I figured these steps out, it actually was fairly easy. I have burned several copies to give to family members, and they play back in my DVD and my PC without problems.

The quality is very good (standard definition). I highly recommend this camcorder.

Editorial Reviews

From the Manufacturer
From Canon’s long history of optical excellence, advanced image processing, superb performance and technological innovation in photographic and broadcast television cameras comes the latest in high definition camcorders.

Now, with the light, compact Canon VIXIA HF100, you can have stunning AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) format recording with the ease and numerous benefits of Flash Memory. It’s used in some of the world’s most innovative electronic products such as laptop computers, MP3 players, PDAs and cell phones.

Add to that the VIXIA HF100’s Canon Exclusive features such as our own 3.3 Megapixel Full HD CMOS sensor and advanced DIGIC DV II Image Processor, SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization, Instant Auto Focus, our 2.7-inch Widescreen Multi-Angle Vivid LCD and the Genuine Canon 12x HD video zoom lens and you have a Flash Memory camcorder that’s hard to beat. VIXIA HF100 Highlights

AVCHD Flash Memory in a Compact Size The VIXIA HF100 is one of Canon’s first AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) format Flash Memory camcorders. AVCHD uses an MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) video codec, recording true 1080 High Definition resolution video. An advantage of the AVCHD format is that it captures twice as much video using less storage, which enhances the extended recording time possible with Flash Memory.

The advantages of Flash Memory go beyond the added recording time. You’ll also appreciate the quick response time, because it doesn’t have to wait for moving parts. Press the record button and your VIXIA HF100 starts recording video faster than you’ve ever seen before. In addition, when you review your footage, it will come up more quickly as well.

Another plus is the VIXIA HF100’s lower power consumption rate, allowing your battery to last longer. It’s just what you need so you don’t miss that pivotal play on the field or the moment when they say “I do”.

While we certainly hope you keep your VIXIA HF100 securely in your hand while shooting, if it happens to slip, or you accidentally knock it against something, you’ll be happy to know that Flash Memory makes your camcorder more shock resistant than other recording storage systems. It also minimizes the chance of data loss due to damage to your recording media or the moving parts in other camcorders.

Making this new technology even more convenient to use is the VIXIA HF100’s compact size and light weight. Measuring only 2.9-inches wide, 2.5-inches high and 5.1-inches deep, it combines big video storage capacity in a small, easy to carry body.

1920 x 1080 movie recording requires a Class 4 or higher memory card. For other recording formats, a Class 2 or higher card is recommended. Also, movie recording requires cards with 128 MB of memory or more. Cards made by Toshiba, SanDisk or Matsushita are recommended. No particular restrictions apply for still images.

Canon Full HD CMOS sensor (1920 x 1080) The HF100 features a newly developed, Canon manufactured HD CMOS Image Sensor. Similar to its use in Canon’s EOS series digital SLR cameras, the CMOS sensor reproduces high resolution images as true HD movies. Canon’s HD CMOS sensor acquires image information at 1920 x 1080 pixels. Canon’s HD CMOS sensor also features on-chip noise reduction technology. This low noise technology feature means that even in dimly-lit scenes, the signals from each pixel are as pure as possible, with minimal “noise” or other aberrations.

Full HD Lens-to-Screen: 1920 x 1080 capture and recording The Canon HF10 not only captures images in Full HD, but records and outputs 1920 x 1080 as well, so you get full HD from lens to screen. Experience the ultimate in clarity and detail.

RGB Primary Color Filter Whether you’re shooting video or photos, you will appreciate the HF100’s stunning, high-definition image production. For rich, accurate color, the HF10 uses an RGB Primary Color Filter. It separates light into red, green, and blue color components, resulting in vibrant images with natural-looking tones similar to what you’d obtain from 3CCD camcorders.

Genuine Canon 12x HD video lens The HF100 comes equipped with a 12x HD video lens. An aspherical lens is used to help achieve low aberration and high resolution. The lens also features super spectra coating technology which lowers flare and ghosting. A gradation ND system is used for better exposure in bright shooting situations. This lens design creates true HD image quality.

DIGIC DV II image processor DIGIC DV II is the next generation of Canon’s exclusive DIGIC DV signal processing technology designed specifically for HD. Since video and still images have different color requirements, DIGIC DV II HD digital signal processing ensures optimal image quality for both HD video and still images. Thanks to DIGIC DV II image processing, the HF100 produces video with improved color reproduction — especially in skin tones, and dark and light scenes. It also uses a hybrid noise reduction system that employs two types of noise reduction — for images that are crystal clear.

SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer The HF100 features Canon’s SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). Utilizing a Hybrid detection method (combining vector and gyro detection method) corrects camera shake instantly for steady shots. And unlike other optical stabilization systems, Canon’s Super Range OIS covers a wide range of movements while preserving image quality. It is even effective while taking photos.

24p Cinema Mode 24p Cinema Mode is a feature demanded by professional filmmakers and previously available only on pro-level camcorders. 24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring movie makers achieve a professional “film-look.” This mode is actually two different features, which can be used independently, or together, depending on the user’s preference.
1. The frame rate changes to 24p — the same frame rate as movie film
2. The HF100 changes the color and tonal characteristics to make you feel like you are watching a movie in the theatre.

30p Progressive Mode 30p Progressive mode delivers clarity for fast-action subjects and is the perfect frame rate for the web. Plus, it is ideal for displaying crisp images on your home theatre system or computer monitor. Before now 30p was exclusively featured on pro-level camcorders but Canon now offers the widest frame rate options for every videographer.

Customer Reviews

Excellent video and Image Stabalization
Great camera. I bought this to replace a Sanyo HD1000 which had unusable IS. This camcorder is up to Canon standards of quality and durability. Nice and small size and weight. Easy to pull video off and burn AVCHD, Bluray, or standard DVD with Ulead Video Studio 11.5 Plus. Optics deliver excellent color and clarity. Audio is free of hummm or other camera noise. This camera has the option to configure using with a wrist strap for people with larger hands or the traditional “slip through” strap for smaller hands. This camera works with my Transcend 16GB SDHC.

Negative. Battery is flush with back of unit, but it is small. I have not tried to use it all day at a place like Disney World, but based on my day-to-day use, I don’t see it working “all-day” on vacation even though it is flashed based.

Great Quality, works awesome with Mac
Camera is exceeded all my expectations. I wanted a small camera i can take everywhere that had “real” HD quality and this camera was perfect.

What really makes this camera great is how easy it is to transfer videos. i’m using a MacBook running final cut express. In final cut express, there is a feature called Log and Capture and it detects the card reader Transcend 16GB SDHC CARD (SD 2.0 SPD CLASS 6) with Compact Card Reader. It list all the clips for you and all you have to do is add it to your queue. I’ll never go back to tapes again. The one that kept me from editing my videos was having to sort through all the tapes.

Editing on a MacBook(2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB ram):for final cut express you’ll need to record on lowest setting for your macbook to handle the editing, but it’s still sharp and higher resolution than Standard Definition. On iMovie, it works even better. iMovie handles HD files great, i just don’t use it because you can’t edit on multiple tracks, but iMovie is perfect for quick home movie edits.

For the price, i prefer this better than canon vixia HF10 because you save $200 dollars and you can get a 16gb card and reader for less than $60. make sure you get the a SD card that is Class 6 so it can handle the HD.

Cons:
- Battery is short.. about an hour. Just get an extra battery and your good.
- Auto Stabilizer is so-so especially on zoom.. Just use a tripod or rest against a wall or table to stabilize yourself.
- on camera light is sucks as usual

The camera is great, regardless of the ridiculously cheap price.
Don’t let the cheap price throw you off.

Great camcorder
I bought this recently and so far I am quite happy with it. About a couple of ago, I had bought a Sony DCR-DVD610 DVD Handycam, but returned it in a month (Thanks, Amazon, for a painless process)as its performannce was not at all to my expectations. Then I saw a friend of mine using Canon VIXIA HF-10, and its recordings were simply stunning. Then I did a bit research and found that Canon’s VIXIA HF-100 was indeed identical to HF-10 (other than the internal memory) in its specs and performance, but quite a bit cheaper. So, I took the plunge and bought my first HD (and a Canon product for that matter) camcorder. Along with this I have bought a flash drive (16 gig, Transcend SDHC with card reader) that Amazon recomends, and it works great too. So far I have made sevral recordings of my kid’s garduation partys, camp performances, etc. and I am extremely happy with the quality of recordings–beautiful, bright color reprodcution even on a far away stage setting, and remarkable autofocus and image stability that I have seen for the first time. And, even the audio recording was not bad ata ll, just with the built-in microphone. Now this camcorder makes me feel like looking for every possible occasion to shoot video–prior to that I always hated home video recordings due to their low image quality and grainy appearance. Now with VIXIA HF series, it seems possible to get really great home video shooting. Very very happy.

The only reason I am not giving a rating of all 5 stars for this prouct is the following: 1) Haven’t had a chance to play with all the recording features–still using the easy mode for recording.
2) The supplied software to save recordings to a PC is not that user friendly, it seems. Esp. if we want to burn DVDs using those saved video files; I have spent a few hours recently and still not able to figure it out–grnated I am not as savvy with these things as some others might be perhaps, and it should have been easier–the software came with the SONY camcorder was much easier and intutive to use.

I might give another update on this in a few months, but for now this Canon VIXIA HF-100 is sinply the best camcorder I have used in the last 10 years. Don’t hesitate to buy this, and you will be very very happy, esp. for the price at Amazon.

Editorial Reviews

Manufacturer Description
If you want to enjoy shooting videos, enjoy viewing them and enjoy creating your own video collection, you’ll love the Digital Palmcorder camcorder. This convenient camcorder also lets you add previous recordings to your video collection.

PV-GS320 Highlights

Advanced Imaging Technologies for Capturing Beautiful Videos

Exceptional Leica-certified image quality with Leica Dicomar Lens Leica AG of Germany is the manufacturer of fine cameras and lenses favored by photographers everywhere. Drawing on Leica’s renowned optical technology, this advanced lens captures clear, crisp, finely nuanced images with outstanding detail and contrast. Thanks to a multi-coating applied during the manufacturing process, the lens also minimizes flare and ghosts.

Advanced Pure Color Engine The Advanced Pure Color Engine is a special image processing circuit for 3CCD camera systems. It processes the R, G and B signals from the three CCDs individually, so it gives both moving and still pictures exceptional quality. This innovative engine also achieves truly superb color reproduction for high-zoomed pictures.

Take breathtaking stills with 3.1-megapixel still-picture recording The PV-GS320 records 3.1-megapixel still pictures. It captures all of the outstanding detail, color and sensitivity. Whether you take still pictures in 16:9 wide mode or 4:3 mode, you get beautiful images. You can print beautiful photos as well as view slide shows on a TV in any mode you like.

So Easy to Use, Even Beginners Get Beautiful Results

One-Touch Navigation for easy, intuitive setting and shooting With One-Touch Navigation, just press the center of the joystick to display an operating menu. The operations you use most often are right on the monitor, so it’s easy to change settings or operate the camera without looking away from your subject.

Mode dial Just turn the dial and you’re ready to shoot or to view the images afterward. Just rotate the dial with your fingertip to select the icon that corresponds to the mode you want.

Trilingual menu The menu can be displayed in any of the following three languages. You can switch it to view all menus in the language you prefer for easy, comfortable operation.

The Joy of Creating Videos that Perfectly Capture a Scene

Tele-Macro for sharp focusing, from a short distance Using the zoom at full magnification, you can shoot macro close-ups while maintaining a short distance from your subject. This makes it much easier to capture extreme close-ups without your body or camera casting a shadow on the subject and while keeping the background in soft focus.

Soft Skin mode When this function detects skin tones, it softens the focus in that area. This has a skin beautifying effect, which makes wrinkles and lines appear less noticeable. When turned on, this function makes blemishes and moles look less conspicuous, while preserving resolution in areas of the picture outside of the skin.

MagicPix for low lighting Leave the light off. MagicPix gives you images with color even in dim lighting (1 lux). Light is gentle and easy on the eyes, so you can snap shots of sleeping children without waking them up.

More Convenient Shooting Functions

Instant LCD/EVF saves battery life When you open the LCD, the power switches on. Shut it and the power goes off. Pull out the viewfinder and the power switches on. Store it and the power goes off. Instant LCD/EVF reduces the time required for operating the camera.

Easy to see, even outdoors – Power LCD Simply press the Power LCD button and the LCD becomes brighter, making it easier to see outdoors or in other bright locations. Also, a new scanning technology allows the LCD to show diagonal lines more sharply.

AGS (Auto Ground-Directional Standby) helps prevent wasted shots The O.I.S. linear motor system can detect when the camera is in an unusual shooting position, and when you’ve inadvertently left it on in recording mode. In these cases, the camera automatically stops recording, saving both battery power and disc or tape space.

Easy Networking — For More Fun When the Shooting’s Done

Customer Reviews

Good quality for a good price
Most of the reviews on here are spot on, so I’ll just go with what doesn’t work that well and what I found to be a con to this camera.

And that is mainly that it’s hard to pick up light while retaining image quality in darker places regardless of what settings are used. Also, I’m disappointed by the lack of external microphone jack, and, from what I’ve seen, the sound quality isn’t of the highest quality.

In the end, I’ll probably just use this for filming music videos.

I’d recommend this camera to those relatively new to film and just need something to get started out with that is of reasonable price. I got mine for $320.

Great camera for inexperienced user
I bought this camera as a semi-impulse buy because at the last minute I decided I needed a video of my wedding ceremony (we had skipped the videographer to save on cost). Besides a brief test, the first time this camera was used was at the wedding. It did a beautiful job. A friend (an amateur) taped the ceremony from about 40 feet away, and the picture and sound both came out very well. You can hear everything, the colors are crisp, the zoom works very well, and the whole thing just turned out beautifully. It was easy to figure out and use and I couldn’t be happier with the result. It also downloaded easily to my iMac and works well with iMovie, although I had to buy a firewire cord to download (it comes with USB which only works with a PC). I got the firewire cord on Amazon for $14.

GS320 has image edge issues.
I just returned the Panasonic PV-320GS MiniDV Camcorder due to one devastating problem: the video quality is at issue when viewing on a 1080p LCD. The edges of everything stairstep badly. It appears like the picture on an old analog tv, dark lines between the lighted pixels. Very lo res. I guess I’ll need to move up to an hd model.
I want to thank Amazon for having a good return policy, accepting the camcorder back for a full refund.

All That Flip Video Goodness, Only Smaller
Product is very nice for what it is advertised for. This camcorder records good video and audio up close. Definitely would recommend for casual use. Family parties, get togethers, etc. Not good for use in a more professional setting.

This product is also extremely easy to use. Video is clear due to the light weight of the unit. Perfect for carrying around in your pocket for use on spur of the moment occasions.
